The challenge was to depict a mundane tool in a way that highlighted the work, time, and precision that went into the product from the design of its individual parts to the point where it was finally ready for daily use. I wanted the final design to communicate that this is a hobby meant to be experienced slowly - that it's about finding fulfillment and beauty in the minutiae and the menial.

Showing the build process made for an easy and cohesive narrative tying the series together. It was therefore crucial for the composition of the photos themselves and the print layout to shine. I chose a spacious, dreamy aesthetic with close-ups often featuring my hands in action to both elevate the process while bringing the viewer closer to the experience of the build.

Disassembled parts

The result was a 5-page series with elements loosely following the grid layout, though not adhering strictly to it, and minimal visual elements aside from the photos and text. The layout allows the eye to wander while still flowing from one page to the next. The final product serves as a brief introduction to the hobby as well as a showcase of how the mundane can also hold appeal.
